National Italian Beef Day | WGN Radio 720

A Chicago initial! Three legendary Italian Beef dining places: Al’s, Buona, and Johnnie’s, share their tales and what tends to make a wonderful Italian Beef.

Invented in Chicago in 1917, the Italian Beef continues to be a important component of the area’s culinary scene with lovers of several manufacturers swearing by their favorites. WGN’s Steve Alexander spoke with homeowners of a few iconic manufacturers: Al’s, Buona, and Johnnie’s. The oldest and potentially most colorful heritage belongs to Al’s, launched in 1938 by Al Ferreri and his sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Chris Pacelli Sr., in Little Italy, wherever UIC is now. That was 21 a long time following the sandwich was invented by Al’s father. Al’s nephew, Christopher Pacelli, current proprietor of Al’s, shared the chain’s heritage with WGN’s Steve Alexander, which includes its colorful get started as a front for a bookie procedure. Buona operator Joe Buonavolanto III and Johnnie’s operator Frank Stompanoto shared their Italian Beef stories, much too.
