A Chicago initial! Three legendary Italian Beef dining places: Al’s, Buona, and Johnnie’s, share their tales and what tends to make a wonderful Italian Beef.
Invented in Chicago in 1917, the Italian Beef continues to be a important component of the area’s culinary scene with lovers of several manufacturers swearing by their favorites. WGN’s Steve Alexander spoke with homeowners of a few iconic manufacturers: Al’s, Buona, and Johnnie’s. The oldest and potentially most colorful heritage belongs to Al’s, launched in 1938 by Al Ferreri and his sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Chris Pacelli Sr., in Little Italy, wherever UIC is now.
